GRENADA REPRESENTED AT REGIONAL LITERACY & CONFINTEA VI CONFERENCE IN LATIN AMERICA
St. George’s, Grenada, September 9, 2008_Minister with responsibility of Education and Human Resource Devolvement Senator Franka Bernadine left the island on Monday 8th September, 2008 as part of a three member delegation representing Grenada at the Regional Literacy and CONFINTEA VI Preparatory Conference in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Literacy Conference which is being held in Mexico City from September 10th to 13th is being hosted by the Government of Mexico and organized in cooperation with the National Institute for Adult Education (INEA). This Conference is merging two major UNESCO initiatives: the Latin America and the Caribbean CONFINTEA VI Preparatory Conference, which is one of five regional UNESCO conferences that will take place in 2008 in preparation of the Sixth International Conference on Adult Education; and the UNESCO Regional Conference in Support of Global Literacy in Latin America and the Caribbean, which is the sixth in the series of Regional Literacy Conferences that have taken place over the 2007 and 2008 period.
The joint Conference in Mexico has the overall objective to consolidate a regional perspective on the key issues, challenges and proposed forward-looking strategies to renew policies and action in adult literacy, adult learning and education in preparation for the global CONFINTEA VI Conference. It will also be a forum to present and disseminate relevant practices and innovations.
Senator Bernadine is accompanied by Mr. Desmond LaTouche, Coordinator Adult Literacy Programme, Ministry of Education and Mr. Peter James, New Life Organization.
