ST. MARK'S SECONDARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES 25 YEARS
St. George’s, Grenada – MOEPRU – Thursday October 22nd 2009 – Officials of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development joined the management, staff and students of the St. Mark’s Secondary School Wednesday as they celebrate 25 years of existence.
A church service was held in observance of the occasion at the Roman Catholic Church in St. Mark and was attended by Permanent Secretary Mrs. Elizabeth Henry-Greenidge, District Education Officer Mr. Jonathan McKenzie and Early Childhood Education Officer Mrs. Pearl Belfon.
St. Mark’s Secondary School was started back in 1984 with the aim of addressing the educational needs of wider cross sections of the student population in the rural communities especially those who were unable to access secondary education in the outer parishes due to their economic hardships.
The first and only secondary school in the parish was officially commissioned on September 10th 1984 welcoming 71 students from common entrance and 13 from the former Junior Secondary School.
The school experienced a very slow population growth during the first ten years as the population remained below 200. That eventually changed and to date the schools population far exceeds its accommodation capacity at Six Hundred and Twenty-four (624) students.
The Institution evolved over the years as one that demonstrated consistency in its academic records and other accomplishments. For the last six years the school has maintained a seventy percent (70%) average and above at the CXC Examination.
Similarly the school has held its position for its outstanding performance in the Technical and Vocational subjects at CXC Exams, winning the La Grenada Shield of Excellence in Tech/Vocational subjects on three occasions.
Under the theme “Resilience Amidst Daunting Challenges” the school will hold a number of activities in observance of their achievement. Among those will be an exhibition and the sale of T-shirts.
