TAMCC STUDENTS TO REPRESENT GRENADA IN ERIC WILLIAMS MEMORIAL COLLECTION REGIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION
St. George's Grenada Saturday January 30th, 2010 - Grenada has submitted three entries to the ERIC WILLIAMS MEMORIAL COLLECTION REGIONAL “School Bags” ESSAY COMPETITION. The competition was dubbed the “school bags” competition because Eric Williams (the late former Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago and one of the brilliant thinkers of his time) reminded students that they carried the future of their nation in their school bags.” The EWMC competition was launched in Grenada by UNESCO on September 8th - International Literacy Day. It is sponsored by the Eric Williams Memorial Collection - University of the West Indies, and numerous other patrons, including UNESCO.
After much hard work, research and writing on this year’s topic “The Cuban Revolution, 1959-2009 – its successes and failures and their relevance to today’s student”, Avi Charles, Willan Mark, and Keron Moore – all students of the T.A. Marryshow Community College will have their essays represent Grenada at the competition.
Head of UNESCO Grenada, Mr. Eugene Gittens said he is happy to see the link between T.A. Marryshow and Eric Williams continue.
Gittens, a sociologist by training, said that it should be remembered that T.A. Marryshow was Eric Williams’ godfather and as noted in the book, “Eric Williams and the Making of the Modern Caribbean”, Williams would listen intently to Marryshow’s discussion of the issues of the day when “T.A.” (as he was affectionately called) visited their home.
Winners of the ERIC WILLIAM MEMORIAL COLLECTION “Essay Competition” will receive attractive prizes including an all expense paid trip to Trinidad & Tobago, a tour of the Eric Williams Memorial Collection and University of the West Indies, US $1000.00 educational voucher, courtesy calls on the President of Trinidad & Tobago and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, laptops, Eric Williams books and much more.
The winning essay will also be published in CARICOM’s Newsletter and the Miami Herald Newspaper on-line edition.
The Eric Williams Memorial Collection consists of a Research Library, Archives and a Museum of the late Eric Williams.
It was inaugurated by former US Secretary of State, Colin Powell in 1998, and added to UNESCO’s prestigious Memories of the World Register in 1999.
